    Lewis chosen as commander

    He was chosen by washington because of his military background and was friends with Jefferson. If he wasnt chosen for the expedition there may never have been an accurate map of the western territory.
  • The Expedition begins

    The expedtion began after Lewis chose his trusted military friend Clarke who was expirienced in mapping as well as an expirienced woodsman. They had a lot of trust in eachother and it was said that the two never had opposing ideas or arguments on big decisions during the expedition.
  • Charles Floyd's death

    Charles Floyd's death
    Charles Floyd's appendix burst and he was buried near present day Sioux City, Iowa, Sgt. Where he is buried is named Floyd's bluff and the stream nearby is named Floyd's river. He was the only expeditionist to die on the trip, except for a few indians.
  • Confrontation with Teton Sioux

    Confrontation with Teton Sioux
    An indian tribe Teton Sioux demanded one of the boats for the expedition in order to pass through their territory. However, Chief Black Buffalo resolved the issue peacefully. After the peaceful confrontation, the explorers stayed with the tribe for three additional days.
  • Toussaint Charbonneau and Sacagawea

    A frenchCandadian fur trapper by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau was hired as an interpreter along with his wife, Sacagawea. Sacagawea proved herself to be very useful during the expedition.SHe showed them where to hunt game, where to gather vegetables, and where good fishing places were. She saved important goods when their boat went down in a storm.
  • Jean Baptiste

    During their journey, Sacagawea gives birth to her child named Jean Baptiste. The father was her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau. Lewis helped deliver the baby. Jean was healthy and kept alive during the expedition.
  • Grizzly Bear

    After being attacked by a Grizzly bear, Lewis and another hunter kill it to protect their goods and themselves from it. This was exciting for Lewis and the men because it had never been described for science.
  • Great Falls of MIssouri

    Lewis went ahead of the rest of the group on the expedition thinking he would see the pacific ocean, to his diddapointment he discovered the Great Falls of Missouri. He also found additional waterfalls upstream. It took them an additional month to pass the falls which were a total of eighteen miles.
  • Shipment delivered to Jefferson

    Jefferson recieved the shipment from fort Madan. Lewis discovered even more mountains when he expected to see plains and rivers flowing into the Pacific ocean. This was a point where he almost gave upyet again but they persevered.
  • Village of Shoshones

    Lewis discovered the shoshones who were sacagaweas long lost tribe. They tried to negotiate for horses and they would have said no had it not been for sacagawea
  • Clark's Journal

    Clarke believed to see the ocean where he wrote a very famous entry journal that reads,"Ocian in view!o!the joy." However the expedition was still 20 miles from sea and horrible storms forced the expeditioners to halt for three weeks with the shoshones. this was a time for reunion with sacagawea and her old tribe as well as a resting period for the expeditioners.
  • Crosssing the south side

    By majority vote the expedition decided to cross the south side of the columbian river in order to build wind quaters. this was the first time slaves and women were allowed to participate in the vote.
  • Fort Clatsop

    The journey home began after fort clatsop was built in honor of the clatsop indian. This was a checkpoint for the expeditioners and the journey home marked the men victorious.

    Bitterroot mountains and the Nez Perce

    When they reached the bitterroot mountains they had to wait for the snow to melt before crossing and they stayed with the Nez Perce indians. Lewis described them as "the most hospitable, honest and sincere people that we have met in our voyage." This showed that the indians got along with the expeditioners.

    Return Home

    when they returned home to Washington D.C. Lewis and Clark were treated like heroes. They recieved double play and 320 acres of land as a reward, the captains got 1,600 acres. Clarke was made indian agent for the west and brigadier general of he territory's militia. Lewis was named govenor of the Louisiana Territory. They successfully mapped the unknown western territory and were rewarded greatfuly for their success.
