Michael's was born into a family of dancers. Although the date of when Michael's first began dancing is not available, web sources tell us that she was only 3 years old when she began. Joe Michaels, her father was her dance teacher. From him she learned jazz, tap, and ballet. Her sister Dana, was also a dancer, she taught Michaels contemporary dance. Michaels danced with her family as well as at the Miami Conservatory, the Miami Performing Arts Center and at Michigan's Interlochen Arts Academy.

Mia Michaels began choreographing dance when she was 11 years old at Miami Dance Center. Along with working at Miami Dance Center, Michaels also taught dance at other schools, guest teaching in NYC and at the International Dance Festival of Italy.

In 1997 Michaels founded RAW in New York where she was also the artistic director and choreographer. She created a dance company within RAW, the company traveled throughout the world performing contemporary dance. Places they traveled included the International Dance Festival in Germany, the Jazz World Congress in Korea. Along with traveling overseas, the company performed in New York City during the 1999 Concert Season.

Michaels created pieces for the Paper Mill Playhouse's production of "Hello Dolly". She also made pieces for Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Jazz Dance Chicago, Oslo Dance Ensemble. Michael's also helped do productions that were off of Broadway two examples are: "If These Shoes Could Talk" and "Fort Chaffee"

Michaels' RAW team traveled to Europe in 2001 to go on Tour. Although Michaels herself did not travel with the company, 10 young dancers represented her and her contemporary style of dance overseas in Europe for 6 weeks. Reading one dancer's experience preparing for the trip, it became clear that Michaels was not an easy person to work for. She demanded a lot and tested her dancers pushing them as far as she could.

Michaels choreographed for Madonna's tour "Drowned World Tour" which took place from June 9, 2001 until September 15, 2001. The tour had shows in the U.S. as well as Europe.

Michaels worked for "Delirium", the first touring show of Cirque du Soleil.

Michaels worked on choreography for Celine Dion's "A New Day" while under the direction of Franco Dragone. The show took place at Caesars' Palace in Las Vegas.
