Men's Fashion Timeline 1900-1940s

  • 1900s

    1900s
Men's fashion was quite formal. Men wore blocky, three-piece suits with sack coats. Tailors made stiff and starched suits, but later in the decade, fashion relaxed a little. Sportswear grew a little during this decade as well. Knickers were developed for men to wear while cycling. Specific clothing was also developed for golf and tennis.
  • 1910s

    1910s
Men's suits became lighter and less boxy to follow a similar trend in women's clothing. The classic trench coat was created during World War I. The war also caused color dyes to be in short supply, so many new patterns emerged that consisted of colored stripes or prints printed onto white material.

    1920s
While women's clothing became less restrictive, men's fashion for this decade remained more conventional. Suits were still commonly worn, but sportswear grew in prominence. Men began wearing styles like argyle sweaters and short-sleeved shirts for tennis and golf.
  • 1930s

    1930s
Casual styles remained popular among men as with women. More and more men wore casual outfits, especially while playing sports. Items like cardigan sweaters and coats were introduced.
  • 1940s

    1940s
For the first half of the decade, during the war, fashions were sharp and military-like. After the war was over, however, men and women's fashion reverted back to like it had been in the 1930s. Men wore more casual clothes and styles went back to the way they were before all of the wartime restrictions on resources. Men's fashion did not change much during this decade as so many were in uniform.
