In 1900-1910 the cravats were most popular. They were a wider tie that evolved from the early 17th century. Bow ties were also common during this time.

Cravats started to go away and ties became more casual. They were still thick like the cravats, but started to look like the ties we know today.

In the 1920's a tie maker, Jessie Langsdorf, invented way of cutting fabric for the ties that allowed the tie to go back to its original shape after wearing. This allowed for many new ways to knot ties. This made neckties more common and bow ties were for formal events.

In the 1930's neckties started to have more patterns and designs because this was during the Art Deco movement.

There was not a big change in 1940's which could be due to World War II. The bolo tie was invented, but was not popular until 1980's.

In the 1950's the skinny tie was invented. The skinny style was made to go with the more form fitting clothes that they wore during this time.
