In 1858 Mary Mackillop left school to work so she could support her family because they were very poor at the time.

Mary took a job as a governess at her uncle’s farm to earn money for herself and her family.

When Mary Mackillop met Fr Tenison Woods in 1862, he offered to help fund the sisters of St Joseph.

Mary Mackillop opened the very first free catholic school in 1866 for any children no matter their skin colour or if they were rich or poor.

In 1871, Mary was kicked out of her church by Bishop Sheil because of insubordination.

Mary travelled to Rome to receive a blessing from the Pope of Rome. He happily gave her the blessing, and while she was there, a group of girls asked her if they could join the sisters of St Joseph, and Mary kindly accepted

Mary, sadly had a stroke several years before she died. She was in a wheelchair for the rest of her life and died a few years later.

In 2010 Mary officially was beatified (became a saint). This can take up to 100 years for a person to be officially become a saint. The people who name a specific person a saint. They need to go through all her history and need to find out what miracles occurred when people pray to her.
