Mary Lyon was born Feb 28, 1797 in Buckland, MA. Mary Lyon was the sixth child in her family. Mary’s parents were Aaron and Jemima.

In 1802 Mary’s father died. Her father was a farmer and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He died when she only five years old.

Jan 1, 1810 Mary Lyon attended local school until she was 13 years old. Mary got her first job as a teacher while still in her teens.

In 1817, she began her studies at the Sanderson Academy in Ash field. There she developed an interest in the sciences, among other subjects.

1836 Mary taught and managed schools in MA and in New Hampshire. She later established Mount Holyoke Female Seminary.

In September 1837, the seminary opened its doors to its first group of students, all 80 of them. It wasn't long before that number grew.

In Jan 1, 1839 Many of Lyon's students went on to be educational or religious missionaries, carrying her educational philosophy and teachings across the globe.

Mary Lyon died on March 5, 1849, in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She is remembered as an educational pioneer.

Also in 1837 the first women's college, which is now known as Mount Holyoke College. The school was founded and educated by Mary Lyon herself.
