Maire and her husband Perrie then got into the science and elements of minerals. She found an interest in the mineral pitchblende, a mineral whose activity, superior to that of pure uranium, could be explained only by the presence in the ore of small quantities of an unknown substance of very high activity which then lead to the discovery of Polonium and Radium.

The couple had a second daughter, Ève, in 1904
