    May 13th, 1717- Maria Theresa was born on May 13th, 1717. She was the eldest daughter and, if a son was not born, she would inherit the country. From her birth until she inherited the land she would be taught and prepared for her future as Queen and Empress. (Trease 125-126)

  • Expulsion of the Jesuits

    1719-The Jesuits were kicked out of countries around the world because they supposedly used their missionary stations as commercial centers. They supposedly didn't pay tithes and concocted lucrative speculations that helped their order than their country. Supposedly they hurt their countries and did more harm than good. Their expulsion was said to help their countries. They also may have been part of a different religion. They were not in the same branch,leading them to be exiled. (Grun 330)
  • Settlement in Vermont Established

    1720- In 1720 one of the first settlements in Vermont was founded. This would lead to the future settlement of Vermont. All these new people would spread out, bring family and friends, and also help settle America.
  • Father's Crowning

    Around 1723- Around 1723, at age 6, Maria Theresa’s father was crowned king of Bohemia. This was important because her country gained land. She also would have a large area to rule when she inherited the land.
  • The American Philosophical Society

    1727- The American Philosophical Society was important in many ways. It was founded in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin. This would add onto his legacy and because it was linked to him it would forever be preserved in history. It also was the first learned society in the American British Plantations. (Grun 331)
  • The Academia de Buenas Letras

    1729- The Academia de Buenas Letras, Barcelona was founded in 1729. This academy was under the patronage of the Crown of Spain. It helped develop the Catalan Dictionary. It focused on Language and Literature and was a bilingual school. It now focuses on other studies and Catalan Literature. (Grun 335)
  • Opium Smoking Outlawed in China

    1729- Opium smoking was outlawed in China by Emperor Yung Cheng. He prohibited this in 1729. Opiates can cause drowsiness, slurred, speech, confusion, memory loss, pupil constriction, and increased pressure in the brain. It can cause weight loss, and fatigue. Hallucinations, convulsions, and respiratory depression also are effects. It has many harmful effects and its outlaw may have saved the lives of many. (Grun 334)
  • Poor Richard's Almanac

    1732- Almanacs were important in colonial times because they provided valuable and needed information, along with entertainment. These also caused some people to be paid a lot of money.Ben Franklin's almanac was a special one since he could do his own calculations because he was a scientist. His almanac could have spread all the way to Georgia, a long way in colonial times. Poor Richard's Almanac was one reason we know of him. (Grun 337)
  • Proposal and Marriage

    January 31, 1736- On this Francis, her future husband, proposed to her. 13 days later they were married. This would be the start of the ruling couple that changed Austria for the better. Maria Theresa would, however, rule most things. (Trease 134)
  • Father's Death

    October 20, 1740- Maria Theresa’s father died of fever. She and her husband inherited the land. This would start their wonderful reign and keep Austria alive for quite some time. (Magill 914)
  • Start of the Eight Year War of Austrain Succession

    1740- This was the start of the Eight Year War of Austrian Succession. Some did not want Maria Theresa as the queen and would rather rule themselves. For eight years a war was fought until, finally, peace came. (Ryers 256)
  • Birth of the Heir

    Early 1741- Francis and Maria Theresa had their fourth child. This one would be their first son, heir to the land. This was important because he would rule someday just like his grandfather wished. (Trease 142)
  • Emperor and Empress

    1745 to 1746- Francis was elected as emperor after the death of a former candidate. A year later Maria Theresa, in 1746, became the empress. This was a great honor and would give them more land. (Trease 124)
  • Death of the Emperor

    1765- Emperor Francis died of a stroke. This hurt Maria Theresa a lot. She only wore black from that day on. She also had a strange fanatic devotion to religion. The death of her husband also had Maria Theresa want to give Joseph, her eldest son, reign. She was convinced not to though and continued to rule until her death. (Ryers 257)
  • The Heir's Mistake

    1778- In 1778 Maria Theresa’s joint ruler, Joseph, advanced on Bavaria despite her warning not to. This would cause a war with Prussia. The future ruler of Austria had just started a war. Shortly after that Maria Theresa died, leaving her son with a war to handle. (Ryers 257)
  • Maria Theresa's Death

    November 29th, 1780- Maria Theresa died. Her health had been deteriorating. Now, on November 29th, she died and her eldest son, Joseph, became king. Her death may have been the fault of a heart condition.
