    Marco, Maffeo (his uncle) and Niccolo (his father) leave for a 3 and a half year journey to China. In 1271 when Marco was just 17 years old he, his uncle and his father set out for China. Traveling over land they reached Peking in 1275. It took 3 1/2 years. They stayed in Khan's court for 17 years aquiring wealth in jewels and gold. (www.history.com)

    In 1271, Kublai Khan established the Yuan Dynasty. They ruled over present-day Mongolia, China, Korea, and some adjacent areas. Khan assumed the role of Emperor of China.     Kublai Khan had tried twice to conquer Japan, the 1st time he failed. Khan sent troops from the Korean Peninsula and China. Most battles were on land along the northern coast of Kyushu.     Princess Kokachin was a 13th century Mongolian Princess from the Yuan dynasty in China. She was betrothed to the Ilkhanate Khan Arghun by the Mongol Great Khan, Kublai. This was done because of a request by Arghun to his grand-uncle Kublai, following the loss of his favorite wife, Bologana, Arghun asked Kublai Khan to send him a relative of his dead wife and Kublai Khan chose the 17 year old Kokachin.
