    Mandy dresses herself: Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt
    Mandy(age 3)has decided that she wants to dress herself today. She picks out a pink tutu, turtle t-shirt, and a princess crown. After getting dressed, she asks her mom if she looks pretty to which her mom responds that she looks great. This is an example of Erikson's second stage, autonomy versus shame and doubt. In this stage a child is learning to be more independent. With encouragement from the adult they will grow a sense of confidence, if told no they may feel a lack of self esteem.

    Mandy learns to play guitar: Industry vs Inferiority
    Mandy(age 10)has just received a guitar for her birthday and has started taking lessons to learn how to play. Each week she is able to learn 2-3 new songs. During this stage she is mastering skills and experiences the joy of learning new ideas and concepts as she is encouraged by her instructor and parents. This is Erikson's 4th stage, industry versus inferiority. If encouraged she will continue to want to learn. but if there is no encouragement she may feel like she isn't good enough and stop.

    Mandy gets married: Intimacy vs Isolation
    Mandy(age 23) marries her best friend Bleys after deciding they would rather spend their days adventuring with each other rather than anyone else. This showcases Erikson's fifth stage of intimacy versus isolation. One would rather form a close relationship than spend the rest of their time alone and apart from others.
