Malala was born on 12 July 1997 in Mingora, a town in the Swat District of northwest Pakistan. Her father named her after Malala, a Pashtun heroine.

In 2012, she was attacked in her school by a masked gun man as Taliban voted to kill her. She was shot with a single bullet which went through her head, neck and shoulder.

She survived the initial attack but was in a critical condition where she moved to Birmingham in United Kingdom to be treated. In the weeks after, over two million people signed the right to education petition where Pakistan ratified its right to free and compulsory education bill.

In 2013, she started the Malala fund to support millions of girls being denied from education because of social , economic, legal and political factors.

In 2015, Malala marked her 18th birthday in Lebanon by opening the Malala Fund Raiser near the Syrian borders to provide education for the biggest possible number of the Syrian girls who live in refugee camps.
