Major Events of William Golding

  • Birth

    William Golding was born September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was raised in a 14th-century house next door to a graveyard.
  • Childhood

    William was 12 years old when he attempted to write a novel. Although he became frustrated and the novel was unsuccessful. He became so frustrated that he began bullying children and acted as a brat, that loved hurting people.
  • After Primary School

    Before William graduated he published a book called "Poems". which was looked over by lots of critics. After he left high school William began studying literature, although his father wanted him to become a scientist. William attended Brasenose College at Oxford University.
  • After College

    William began teaching in 1935, following his father's footsteps. He taught young boys, which was his inspiration for "Lord of the Flies".
  • Royal Navy

    In 1940. Golding went into War World II fighting off two battleships and fending off submarines and planes. After the war ended in 1945, William went back to teaching and writing.
  • Lord of the Flies

    Golding published his first and most acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies, after 21 rejections. His novel told a story of boys stranded on an island.
  • Death

    The last few years of William Golding's life was very quietly enjoyed with his wife. He continued writing as he was married with two kids.On June 19, 1993, Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. His legacy was remembered forever.
