  • The Sit-in Movement

    This movement brought large numbers of college students into the civil rights struggle.

    The riders were beaten by a gang of young men with bats, chains, and pipes.
  • Violence in Birmingham

    MLK launched demonstrations in Birmingham and he knew they would provoke a violence response.
  • The Civil Rights Act

    This law segregation illegal in most public places and it gave all citizens equal access to public facilities.
  • The Struggle for Voting Rights

    The 24th ammendment eliminated poll taxes in federal elections.
  • The Voting Rights Act

    This act authorized the US attorney general to send federal examiners to register qualified voters.
