John Duberyfield talks to a guy while going home. The man tells him his family descended from a very noble and popular family named the D'uvervilles. Tess is at a festival that her dad comes to, to pick her up in a carriage, many people make fun of him.

When Tess's dad is to drunk to go to the market himself Tess and her brother have to go. While on the way the carriage they are riding in collides with another noble families and the horse of the family dies. Tess agrees to go out and work to help pay for a new horse.

Tess leaves to go to the D'ubervilles because she was offered a job from them and the son taker her there. Her mom does not like her being with Alec and she ends up being right about his character. He turns out to be an odd guy and drives fast and will only slow down if Tess kisses him. Alec keeps trying to get Tess to be with him and she keeps rejecting him. Alec lets the horse to look for something and comes back to find Tess asleep and rapes her.

Tess leaves the D'ubervilles knowing she will never like Alec, Alec finds her while she is going home and offers a ride which she says no to. When she gets home her mom is surprised to see her, but she is unhappy that Tess did not marry Alec. Tess becomes very sad and unhappy with her life.

Tess and Alecs child gets very unhealthy and sick and she is scared it may die. The child ends up dying after Tess christens the child. She asks for a christian burial but she is denied and they say they cant do it but she can bury the child herself near a church.

Tess is uhappy with her current life, and decides she has to leave Marlott and leave her home behind. She gets a job as a milkmaid and is able to leave. While she is working at Talbothays she recognizes a guy from the festival named Angel.

Angel and Tess talk a lot and get closer as they talk about their lives with each other. He talks about how he has 2 other siblings and he is very smart but his religious beliefs held him back from college. Tess and Angel start to talk a lot and it is obvious something is happening between them. The production of butter has been not good and the other workers say that that is what always happens when two co workers are in love.
