Born in Saint Coulomb Minor, England. Early William got his education at Marlborough Grammar school. During his youth, he tried composing literature, yet became frustrated by it. After Primary School, he attended Oxford University.

Taught at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury.

Served in the Royal navy for 5 and a half years. Notable for being involved in the battle that sunk the German warship Bismarck. Also fought during D-Day, and wrote a book about his experiences during D-Day called Seahorse. After the war, he returned to being a teacher.

Died of heart failure in Perranarworthal, England. He spent much of his late life with his wife, Anne Golding. His son lives in his mansion now.
