On September 19, 1911, William Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was born in his grandmothers house and his dad taught at Marlborough Grammar School.

When William was 12, he tried to write his own novel but failed. He soon let his anger out on his classmates, even saying "I enjoy hurting people".

After finishing primary school, William attended Brasenose College at Oxford University. A year before he graduated he wrote his first piece of literature titled "Poems".

In 1940, Golding joined the Royal Navy to fight in WWII. During his time in the navy, he mostly spent his six years in water and he fought in the battle of Bismarck.

After WWII had ended, William went back to teaching and writing. He would began writing novels in this time period.

Golding published his first novel in 1954 and it was rejected 21 times before. The title of the book was "Lord of the Flies" and is still one of his famous books today.

In 1983, Golding was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for literature. He also knighted by the king of England in 1988.

On June 19, 1993, William Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Golding will always be known for his great works of literature and writing.
