    On August 28, 1963, more than 200,000 Americans gathered in Washington, D.C. For a political rally known as the March on Washington for racial equilty. the rally was lead by D.R Martin Luther KIng JR. the rally was also organized by a number of civil rights and religous organizations. the event was to speak on the political and social challenges African Americans face across the country. The event was most famous for Martin Luther Kings "I Have A Dream Speech"

    On September 15, a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. a church that served as a meeting place for civil rights leaders. Four young girls were killed and many other people injured. outrage over the incident many people protested but the federal government did not take action. even though the perpatrators were identified. only till 2002 was fully settled.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered as a legislative achievement of the civil rights movement. proposed by President John F. Kennedy. it had strong opposition from southern members of Congress and was then signed into law by Kennedy’s successor. In later years, Congress expanded the act and also pass aditonal adments such as the voting rights act 1965.

    the voting rights bill was passed into senate on may 26, 1965 after debating the bill for more than a month on august 6 president johnson signed the voting rights acts into law on with civil rights leaders present at the cermony such as Martin Luther King. the act banned the use of of literacy test. since its passage the voting rights acts has been amended to include such features as the protection of voting rights for non- english speaking american citizens
