Kala goes to a small high school in a small town in Arkansas. She is a brilliant young girl, who gets made fun of a lot for it. She is constantly being bullied by a group of girls and its only the first month of school.

Kala has joined a special club at her high school which has been helping her out with her bullying problems. They have given her some advice to stay away from the bullies and do not back down to them.

Kala has become more confident with handling bully situations at school. Her mom has been divorced by her dad who now lives in California. Her mom starts to date another man named Tony who Kala is supicious about. He always seems nice to her mom when Kala is around but he has heard him yell at her before.

Kala hears her mom crying one night in heer room. She goes into her room to see bruises and cuts on her face. Her mom tells her the story of what happened when her and Tony got into an argument. Kala is very uset about the situation. She tells her friends about what happened when she gets to school, but somehow the word got out and the girls who bully her found out. They start to make fun of her for what has happened to her mom. Kala doesn't know how to control this any more.

Kala goes to school that week in fear that the girls will tease her. The girls keep tourmenting her and making her upset. Kala goes and talks to her counselor about what has been going in her life the past month and a half. Her counselor decides to call all thegirls down and have a talk about what has been going on.

Kala's counselor talks to the girls about bullying that they have expierenced in the past. It turns some of them have been abused by their parents. Kala accepts the girls' apology and they become friends.

Kala's mom talks to Kala about moving away to another state to start over. Kala talks her mom into staying and they call the police about the assualt charges. Tony is then put into jail.
