William Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. His mother fought for womens rights, while his dad worked at a school house. Which he would later attend.

At the age of 12 years old, he attempted, and failed, to write a novel. Yet that didn't stop him, he still wrote poems but didnt publish them.

Attended Brasenose College at Oxford University, and William published his first work, a book of poetry aptly entitled Poems. But people still didn't like his works.

After college, he worked in a settlement house, then switched to a theater for some time. But in 1935, he started working at a school like his father. Him taking this action, later gave him the inspiration for Lord Of The Flies.

He spent 6 years on a boat expecpt for 6 months in New York. He ended up falling in love with the sea. He also fought in World War 2. After the war ended he went back to writing.

After 21 rejections, Lord of the Flies was finally published. The story tells of a stranded boy after a plane wreck.

After many years of teaching and writing he finally retired from everything. That same year the Lord of the Flies was made into a movie.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Which is a huge deal and accomplishment.

In 1988, he was knighted by England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Which brought him more attention then his Nobel Prize did.

On this day Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Even after his death, one of his books The Double Tongue was published
