Today they loaded their boat in preparation for the trip. A few of the people attended mass. They were preparing for their trip starting from St. Louis, Missouri and the the Mississippi.

As they were steering the boat near the shore, the wheelman turned the boat to much. At that point the mast caught on a Secamore tree. The mast broke very easily.

On the day the mast broke, they decided to make camp while they prepared the mast. That night a Nightingale sang all night. It was the first time that all of them had heard a Nightingale sing.

After being sick for one day, Sargent Floyd became more ill. He proceeded to die on this day. They buried him with tears with Honors of War on a bluff above the river.

They gave 60 indians from the Sioux tribe some tabacco and other provisions. They camped on the opposite shore. They indians told them their camp was 9 miles from the Missouri.

Lewis and Clarke met five indians that were musicians. They gave the indians a deer hide to use on a drum. They exchanged other small gifts. No squaws made an appearance at the meeting.

The indians took Lewis and Clark on a robe. The eight indians carried them so they wouldn't have to walk. Then the indians brought dogs and killed them and feed the other members. They told them about the next tribe over. They then had a huge party. They helped them by giving them information and food.

One of the wives of the Charbono delievered a healthy boy. One of the men on the expedition came up with an remedy for a pain killer. It was part of the rattle of the rattlesnake.

A number of the indians and one of the chiefs from the Big Belley tribe came to the forth. They came to see the rifle and the spy glass. Which all of the indians thought were great medicines.

We came at a resting place. It was a field that was covered with snow. They weren't able to take off again because the snow was to deep.

The interpretor's wife, Sahcahgagwea, became very sick. Which they continued to bleed her which seemed to help her. Also another member of the expedition Had a tooth ache.

Lewis and three of the men came upon the Shoshone Tribe today. These indians live on roots, berries, buffalo, small game, and fish. The women convinced the men that the men were friendly. These were the first white men that the Shoshones have ever seen.

They met indians today that didn't use an axe but had some different kind of knives. These indians appear to hold their women in high regard. The younger people are permitted to talk in high council.

They had been hunting during the winter and had gotten about 150 elk. Also killing about 20 dears. Which they obtained 338 pairs of fine Elk Moccasins

The Blackfeet indians approached Lewis and two others while they were sleeping. They took their guns and made a run for it. The men caught the indians and one of Lewis' men stabbed the indian in the heart with his knife. There was two of the indians killed. This was the only hostitle encounter with indians while on the trip.
