    The Yankon Sioux tribe was the nicest of the Souix tribes they came across. The expedition learened about the culture and some techniques. They also learned that the Souix broke camp following the buffalo herds.

    Every day at the fort, the men performed drills and frequently changed guard. The water came from the river but sometimes it was hard to reach because of the ice. Once, the hunters of the expedition were invited to go hunting with the Mandan.

    Black Cat, the cheif of the Mandan, showed Lewis and Clark where they could make camp for the winter. The Native Americans gave them gifts of meat and corn. Clark gave the cheif's wife a vase in return.

    It was a long winter at Fort Mandan. When the expedition was ready to go the river was still frozen and their keelboat was extremely hard to get out. They had finally gotten it out but not without damage. Because the ir boat wasdamaged they made dugout canoes from the trees.

    As the days got warmer at Fort Mandan the spirits of the members of the expedition got higher. The ice was now melted enough that the expedition could move on. With their new canoes and high spirits the expedition moved onward.

    The blackfoot indians had taken their wepons. This caused a fight. At one point someone drew a knife and before they knew it an indian was dead.
