  • First Indian Encounter

    Oto and Missouri Indians come to Lewis and Clark's Camp. Thre was no violence. The tribes exchanged gifts with the entourage and they were warned to be wary of the unfriendly Sioux tribe in the north.
  • Explorers encounter the Sioux

    Lewis and Clark offered the Sioux a medal, military coat, and hat opon meeting them. The Sioux were not pleased and demanded their boat as well. Lewis and Clark took out their gun and sword and prepared to fight the hostile tribe, but no violence took place. The Sioux let them pass and continue their journey.
  • Winter

    Spent winter at Fort Mandan where they met Sawagawea (Native American translator), her husband Charbanneau (French fur trapper), and their son Jean Baptiste, who would accompany Lewis and clark on their journey.
  • Grizzy Bears

    Lewis and Clark had been warned about the bears from natives but never saw one in person until that day. They were not worried because they had guns but realized they were a danger once once charged at Lewis. This was the first time Americans had encountered grizzly bears.
  • The Shoshone

    Lewis sees a Shoshone Indian, who thye have been searching for because the tribe has many horses, which the explorers desperately need. The Idian met lead Lewis and Clark back to his tribe, where they met the cheif, Cameahwait, who luckily ended up being Sacagawea's brother. Clark bargained with the chief for horses and acquired several. Without these horses they would not have been able to make it through the Rocky Mountains.
  • False Joy

    After passing trough the mountains, Clark spots a body of water which he believed to be the Pacific. It turned out to only be estuary of the Columbia. The expedition was still 20 miles away from their destination. After this their journey to the Pacific Ocean was delayed for 3 weeks becuase of a storm.
  • The Journey Home Begins

    After spending the winter camped out by the Pacific ocean the men finally decided to go home. They packed their bags and began the journey East in the 3rd week of March, 1806.
  • Crossing the Bitterroots

    Lewis, Clark, and their men left the Nez Perce Indians who they been been staying with for a brief time until it was warm enough to cross the Bitterroot Mountains. The snow on the mountains was so deep (10 feet), the group was unable to cross and had to turn back to the Nez Perce Tribe.
  • Finally Home

    Lewis and Clark arrive back in St. Louis. Everyone thought they had died since they were gone for so long. Their exoedition lasted 2 years, 4 months, and 10 days.
