    Leaving For A New Life
    Rifka and her family managed to find a route out of Berdichev, Russia. Since they were poor Jews they were not liked by many. When she and her family arrived at the train station to leave, Rifka was approached by two Russian guards. Since her looks were not of a normal Jews she was treated kindly but had to distract the two until the train came. One was suspicious but Rifka managed to keep their attention until her Uncle distracted them as well so that her family could board the train too.

  • Arriving In Poland

    Rifka and her family boarded the train they had to stop in Motziv, Ploand where they were examined for illness and other suspicions. Rifka and her family had to take their clothes of and felt very uncomfortible, especially Rifka. After reboarding the train Rifka fell into a deep sleep and when she woke up she didnt feel well. She and her family had to stop by her Aunt Anne and Bubbe Ruth's house. There Rifka and her family had to stay in a shed where Rifka became more and more ill each day.
  • Illness In Poland

    As Rifka became more ill her family thought that she needed medical attention. When the medical student arrived he had stated that Rifka had typhus. And that she got it from Russia and Poland candeport them but, he figured Rifka would die either way. Rifka could not speak but knew that she had gotten the typhus from one of the guards that had spray which infected became weak, When Rifkas parents and brother were sent to the hospital she began to have depression which was worse than the typhus.
  • A New Enviorment

    Rifka and her brother Saul were left in the shed alone, he thought that they needed a new place to stay. So Rifka and her brother moved into a tiny, not so much better MotelInn. Rifka was not very excited but she understood why she had to leave her Aunt and Uncles house. She and her family brought illness, took their food, and broguht sadness and worry into their household. In the motel Rifka ans Saul didnt have much food. But the Innkeepers daughter had stolen that little she did have.

    Off To Warsaw, Poland
    After all of Rifkas family got better they decided to move to Warsaw, Rifka remembered living in Russia and people saying "Warsaw ?- HA!" and people saying thats like moving to America. But, Rifka was confused on why they would think that. But, she arrived she soon understood. They would not allow her into Warsaw because she was infected. After having a ringworm they would not allow her to go threw.
  • Finding A Way Into America

    Rifka had to be left behind as her family went to America. Rifka was upset that her ringworm held her back, but she understood that once she got better she would be able to leave. Rifka recieved much money and letters from her family in America. Rifka felt like an orphan she was lonely.
  • Saying Goodbye

    Rifkas family had to leave her alone in Europe as they made their trip to America. They sent letters about their journey but, Rifka did not feel the same. She felt as if she was an outcast. She had no hair, no friends, and no family. She had noone and needed someone quickly.Rifka only had the nun, Ms. Katrina which did her treatments and tried to urge her to do something in Warsaw,

    When Rifkas mother and father left they handed her many of their belongings. Her mother gave her a locket which Rifka charished dearly. Her father gave her a tallis. Her brothers left themselves in her memory. She knew that she would miss her family dearly.
  • Meeting People in Antwerp

    Rifka was surprised at the people in Antwerp. They were so kind, generous, even the children. Rifka loved the fact thta everyone in Antwerp was so kind to her, they loved her very much. She wsa called clever and she learned alot from the people there, she was excitred about that.
  • Leaving Antwerp

    Rifka was very excited that her ringworm had vanished. She was able to finally leave for America. the nun who had been treatring showed her to her to the steamship that would take Rifka to Amrerica the next day. Rifka was upset about leaving her friends. Marie and Gaston had planned her a party, Gizzel was sad to say goodbye, and she had brought Sister Katrina a bouquet of flowers because she loves them.
  • On The Atlantic Ocean

    Rifka enjoyed herself on the shi. She had her only little room and muh more. She met many people, you she has heaard much of the same things from like, "Rifka, you are such a clever, brave girl.'' Rifka was flattered but urged to get to America. The trip took a very long time, which Rifka could not uphold.
  • The Storm that Hit

    During the storm Rifka was scared. Sh ethought thaqt the whole trip would be safe and peacful. She was lucky to survive the storm unlike others. Pieter had saved her. Rifka was very thankful but scared she wanted to be in America already but unluckly for her she had a long trip to go.
  • Arriving on Ellis Island

    The ship finally arrived in Ellis Island. Rifka was very excited to see her family. She had been prepared for the many questions in Ellis Island. Rifka was ready, but she knew that she was not in America until she had passed the line through Ellis Island.
  • STaying In Ellis Island

    Rifka was forced to stay in Ellis Island because the doctors believe that her hair is a problem. They believe that if she stays bald she will not have a husband to take care of her. Rifka didnt understand that but she knew that if her hair didnt grow back she would be sent back to Russia
  • Ellis Island Hospital

    Rifka was sent into the hospital where she had to sleep in a crip which was convinient because she was small. But, eventually Rifka was moved into a slightly better ward where she had her own bed and met Nurse Bowen and was able to get away and meet new peple and speak engish.
  • Finally Seeing Family

    Rifka was able to see her brother. She was overjoyed at the fact that she was finally able to see her family memeber. After one year it mean alot to her.

    Rifka was told that tomorrow the doctor would let her know if she was eligble to enter the united states. She was very nervous and didnt know what to expect. SHe just wanted to know that she would finally be able to enter America with her family.
  • Making It To America

    Rifka was accepted into america! She was very happy and so were her parents.Rifka and her family would finally be able to explore America together. She went through so much trouble for her family. This shows that Rifka cares more about her family than she does about herself an materialistic things.
