  • The Escape

    The Escape
    Rifka and her family were runing away from the Russian soldiers because Rifka's older brothers were goig to be put into the army. While they were tryig to escape, the guards found Rifka ad they asked her why she wasn't at school and Rifka just stood there and distracted them. While she did that her family jumped on the train to Poland. So, Rifka could get on the train too, her uncle distracted the guards and Rifka got on the train to Poland.

    Rifka's journey

    Rifka and her family were running away from the Russian guards because her brothers were going to be forced into the army. They went on a train to Poland. On the train, Rifka caught ringworm from a girl on the train. Once, Rifka and her family got to Poland, they had to get evaluated by a doctor. Rifka had to stay behind because of her ringworm. She stayed in Belgium while her ringworm was being treated. Finally after her ringworm was gone, she got to go to America and live with her family.

    The Examiation
    Once Rifka and her family got to Poland a few guards came on the train telling them to get undressed or go back to Russia. They all got undressed and got examined by a doctor. While, they got examined a few guards fumigated there clothes and looked through their personal stuff. Once they got their clothes ad items back Rifka realized Mama's candlesticks were gone.

    The sickness begins
    Rifka got sick from the spray the doctor gave her. So, her family stopped in Motziv to let Rifka heal. They stayed with their dad's cousin. They had to sleep in the shed because there was no where else to go. A medical student came and told Rifka she had typhus, a vry contagious disease. Everyone except Saul got typhus and everyone who got it, except Rifka had to go to the hospital.

    Once Rifka was better. Saul found a place for them to live in. They had to stay there until the rest of their family got better. They only got to eat herring and a roll. Rifka one day did not eat hers and saved it for Saul because he works and needs food. But, when Rifka saved the food a little girl was in her closet eating it and Rifka got really mad. When, Rifka told Saul he said that she should of eaten the food.

    The journey to Warsaw
    Rifka and her whole family are healed and on their way to Warsaw. When Rifka was taking a walk on the train she saw a girl nursing a baby. Rifka fixed the girls hair because she was going to see her sister. When she was fixing it she saw a few sores on her head, but she did not want to upset the girl. Rifka fixed her hair. Then on her way back to her seat she asked her mom to get off the train, but could not because her mom did not want to loose her. Rifka was mad and just wrote in her Pushkin
  • The Disapointment

    The Disapointment
    Once Rifka's whole family got to Warsaw, they went to get their tickets. Before they could get their tickets, they had to examined their bodies. Everyone except Rifka was able to go and get their ticket. Rifka had ringworm, a sore on her head. Rifka's dad tried to bribe the man to let her go, but it was not possible. Rifka had to stay in Belgium with out her family until she was healed.

    A lonely, important birthday
    Rifka had to say goodbye to her family and was then off to Belgium. She had a very nice room to live in. Her birthday came while she was without her family. She celebrated it herself. Her ringworm made her hair fall out of her head. During her treatments, Sister Katrins, would say a prayer with Rifka and they would have a conversation.

    The Nice Milkman
    On Rifka's way back home from her daily treatments, she took a different route, so she could explore Antwerp. She saw many different things, but ended up getting lost. She asked the milkman how to get home hoping he was very nice. He brought Rifka to her house and even to her front door. Rifka thought he was like her Uncle Zeb, so when she said good-bye she felt like she was finally saying good-bye to her uncle.

    Rifka plays in the park with the children. She also tastes new kinds of food: a banana, ice cream, and chocolate. Sister Katrina told her, her ringworm was healing. Rifka got a new hat to cover up her ringworm.

    America, Here Rifka Comes
    Rifka find out, she can go to America. She was very excited. Rifka got a ticket ofor a small boat because she did not want to go two weeks in steerage, with no space. Before Rifka left, she said good-bye to her friends and was off.

    On Rifka's way to America, she met a boy, Pieter. He works on the ship and is very nice. He always helps people out and is very funny. He dances, while cleaning the floors. Rifka and Pieter were talking and then Pieter kissed Rifka, right on the lips. He then ran off leaving Rifka there.
  • The terrible storm

    The terrible storm
    On Rifka's way to America, a terrible storm hit, making everyone stay on the bottom deck of the ship. Rifka stayed down there worrying about Pieter and her Pushkin. Once the storm was over, Rifka asked one of the guys if Pieter was on board, but they told her that the ship lost one member. It was Pieter. Rifka cried her heart out once she found out.

    Rifka was thinking about the letter Papa sent her about getting into America. He told her about all the questions and the examination to get into America. Rifka was not scared because she is good about answering questions.

    Rifka finally got to America, but was not aloud in. The doctors were concerned about her ringworm and her hair. They did not want her ringworm to spread. They were also worried about her hair because if she does not have hair they think she will not get married, which means the government would have to take care of her.
  • The Russian Peasant

    The Russian Peasant
    Rifka has not been aloud in America for a week now. She sleeps in a crib, so she does not have to sleep with anyone with a disease, she does not want. Saul visited her and made Rifka excited. Once, Rifka got to eat, she saw a little boy across the table from her that did not eat a thing. His name was IIlya and wanted to go back to Russia. By the time, Rifka went to get food for him there was no more, so she gave him some of hers.

    A Familiar Face (FINALLY)
    Finally, someone came and visited Rifka. It was Saul, he skipped school and came to see her. He did not recognize her without hair. Saul gave Rifka a banana, thinking she would be confuzed, but she opened it and ate it. IIlya came and met Saul. He wanted to read the Pushkin, but then Saul found it. Saul did not like it and broke the star she made. Rifka then gave Saul money to buy Mama new candlesticks. He was suprisedc about the money, but agreed to buy them.

    Mama finally visited Rifka. She was very surprised about her hair and everything about her. She talked with the doctor and Rifka could not leave until she got examined again.
  • The Dangerous, yet Funny Accident

    The Dangerous, yet Funny Accident
    Rifka and IIya were walking through a part of the hospital and IIya heard a noise, so he went to it and Rifka was freaking out because she thought she lost him. Rifka found him unrolling paper. RIfka freaked out and made IIya run with her away from the room. While they were running IIya hurt his shoulder on the wall. The nurse checked him while she was laughing. Rifka thought it was a crime to waste paper like in Berdichev, but it was not. Rifka was relieved and so was IIya.

    Tommorow will be Deciding Day
    One of the babies Rifka has taken care of, was foung dead in her crib. When the doctor came in, he told Rifka and IIya that tommorow will be deciding day, to see if they can enter the country.

    Rifka and IIya were nervous and saw their families waiting to know what will happen. IIya got examined first. He was healthy, but did not talk. Rifka yelled at him until he read from her Pushkin. Once IIya was admitted into the country, Rifka was next to know. The doctor examined her and found out her hair was growing back. Rifka was excited and so was her family.
