Summary: Renata was only about two years old when she, her mother, and her grandmother were taken by the Nazis. She didn't understand why they were at war, and why the Nazis hated them so much.

Theme: When Renata was taken, she was about two years old, so she's practically a baby still. She's already experienced far more than what other kids at her age are going through. This means that she needs to mature and grow up faster than other two year olds. -
Summary: Renata's mother and grandmother, were taken somewhere unknown when they were at work. It was known that wherever these people were taken to, they were probably going to die.
Type of Event: Character Development-This is where Renata realizes how the Nazis are evil, and now, only about three years old, She has lost her mother, grandmother, and doesn't know where her father is.
Theme: Now losing the only people who were taking care of her, Renata needs to be more independent. -
Summary: Jadwiga offered to take care of Renata because she has no one to live with. Jadwiga used to be a teacher and show Renata how to read and write.
Type of Event: Character Development- Renata obtains a new passion for reading. Reading allows her to escape her horrible and terrifying realities.
Theme: Renata needed to be strong in order to survive. She used reading and writing as her way of coping with the fear and sadness. -
Summary: Jadwiga can't take care of Renata anymore, so she puts Renata in an orphanage. Renata made friends named Cesia and Basia. Cesia taught Renata how to steal other people's turnips, so that they could get more food.
Type of Event: Character Development- In the orphanage, Renata learns how to hate, to steal, and that you shouldn't trust anyone.
Theme: Renata learns how she's suppose to survive in the orphange, and that some people are evil. -
Summary: Renata's cousin, Frederika, finds Renata in the orphanage and takes her to Renata's Great Aunt and Great Uncle. Here, Renata learns more about the war and starts to understand more and more. She also begins to read more because of the library in their area.
Type of Event: Turning Point
Theme: Renata is moving to another new place with people she doesn't really know that well, so she might not know how to interact with them. She'll need to learn more things in her new environment. -
Summary: Since the war was ending soon, a Roman Catholic School reopened near where Renata and her great grandparents lived. They pretend that Renata's Protestant, and they enroll her into the school. She learns how to be a Catholic and gets to read more.
Type of Event: Character Development- During her time in the Catholic school, Renata decides that she wants to become a Catholic and her beliefs start to change.
Theme: Renata and her family had to lie just so that Renata could go to school. -
Summary: Renata's father can be reunited with Renata again, and Renata leaves her great grandparents and friends to meet her father in London with Frederika.
Type of Event: Turning Point
Theme: After several, difficult years, Renata finally gets to see her father again. This is like Renata's happily ever after. Renata had so much taken away from her at a young age. However, after all she'd been through, she was finally reunited with her father and became a survivor of the holocaust/World War 2. -
