Nel trattato di Verdun dell'843 i tre figli sopravvissuti di Ludovico il Pio divisero il suo territorio, l'Impero carolingio, in tre regni. Il figlio maggiore, Lotario I, aveva dichiarato guerra ai fratelli fin dalla morte del padre, avvenuta nell'840.
