    she's engaged! intimacy vs. isolation
Ellen had accepted Rowans hand in marriage and decided that she'd spend the rest of her life together with him. In Eriksons fifth stage of intimacy versus isolation, the crisis here is creating a close long-term relationship with someone other than family and learning to commit to another person instead of isolating oneself.

    celaena graduates! generativity vs stagnation
Ellen and Rowan's oldest daughter Celaena graduates from med school and becomes a children's doctor! Both parents are extremely proud of their daughter and feel like they've raised her right to become the strong woman she is. In Erikson's theory generativity vs stagnation, we see that both Ellen and Rowan feel like they've nurtured someone to become the best person they can be who will outlast them in life.

ellens last days ego integrity vs. despair
Ellen passed away surrounded by all her loved ones. She lived a long life taking care of her family at home and as well as her patients while working as a nurse. Looking back, she was most proud of her children and had little to no regrets. In Eriksons theory integrity vs despair, we see crisis between satisfaction with one’s life despite its imperfections (ego integrity) and regret and wishing to be able to do one’s life over but recognizing it is too late (despair).
