In theese early stages the knights armour was simply chain mail from neck to knees with a woolen tunic underneath. They had a helment covering their head and nose. The shield was large and shaped like cone.

In the late 1100"s the knights wore chain mail with a surcoast over the top to reduce heat. Chain mail covered the neck and was attatched to the helmet. The shield was a medium style and was shaped like a squashed cone.

Bascinate helments were now worn with visers that could be lifted. The shield was a different shape and was smaller. iron gloves were worn. This armour was so heavy that if a knight fell down he would not be able to get up again by himself.

The knights armour changes to a full body suit weighing around 25kg. They were more flexible than chain mail but heavier. By this time no shields were needed.
