Kitty Genovese Timeline

    Catherine (Kitty) Genovese, 28, was coming home from her job as a bar manager. Kitty parked her car outside the shop in which her appartment was above and walked a short distance to the building. The entrance behind the building, and Kitty noticed a man nearby. She decided to call the police, and made her way to the street's phone box.

    When the event seemed to have finished the lights of the appartments went out and the attacker returned to Kitty, who was trying to get to the entrance to her apartment. The man caught up and stabbed her again, Kitty began screaming that she was dying, the apartments lights came on again and people looked out their windows to see what was happening. The attacker got in his car and drove away as this happening a bus went past as Kitty staggered to her feet.

    The attacker returned again by the time Kitty had dragged her way to the back of the apartment, he checked each set of doors to find her and eventually found her slumped against a set of stairs where he stabbed Kitty for a third time, this time fatally.

    At 4:25amKitty's body was taken from the scene, only after the ambulance had left people began to come out of the apartment.

    As she reached a street light, the man grabbed her. As a result she screamed, causing the lights to go on in the apartmentsand people to look out at what was happening. She yelled to the appartments that she had been stabbed. A man called down to the attacker to leave the girl alone to which the attacker shrugged his shoulders and began walking away to his car.

    After Kitty was stabbed three times the first call to the police they arrived in two minutes. The man who contacted the police admitted that he only did so after a long time of deliberation and callling for advice from a friend.

    Six days after the murder, Winston Moseley 29, was arrested by police. Winston was married with two children and had no previous record.
  • Winston Moseley admitted to psychiatric ward

    Winston Moseley admitted to psychiatric ward
    The court demed Moseley psychologically unwell and admitted him to a hospital psychiatric ward the same week. When questioned by police, Moseley also admitted to killing two other women even though another man had already confessed to the killing. The police claimed had one of the 38 witnesses contacted police, they could have saved Kitty's life,

    The bystander effect is a social psychological case to explain situations which individuals don’t offer assistance to help to a victim when other people are present, they most likely believe that someone else will help them. It is predicted that the probability of helping a victim is related to the number of bystanders in the situation. In the case of Kitty the people in the apartments believed that others would have made the call to the police or helped Kitty, in turn letting her be murdered
