  • Soviet Union Invasion

According to the NYT, "Afganistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded" (1). This experpt explains that with the changing of the government, Afghanistan was never able to be a completely safe place due to the constant war. With this information, it is easy to assume that many of the events associated with Afghanistan will be revolved around war.
  • First Soviet Troops Parachute

In order to aid forces, the NYT claims, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979, to assist Barak Karmal, who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership" (2). With this evidence, it becomes clear that the army of Afghanistan was highly important to the safety and security of the country. Thus proving that recruiting characters for the army will be something to take note of.
  • Soviet Troops Leave Behind Destruction

As the NYT puts the aftermath of the Soviet invasion, "..[T]he last Soviet trooops left Afghanistan in February 1989, in what was in effect aunilateral withdrawal. They left behind a country that was not only devastated by the war but that had become a beacon to Islamic extremists from across the globe..." (2). Within this text, it is visible that due to the war, Afghanistan is immensily set back in its ability to thrive.
  • Mullah Omar; the Taliban Takeover

The NYT summarizes the Taliban revolt led by Mullah Omar as, "[R]olling up the warlords to the north and east. With his promise of restoring the centrality of Islam to daily life, he created a geniunely popular movement in a country weary of corruption and brutality" (2). Due to the takover of the Taliban, Afghanistan goes through large changes within the next few years when the Taliban takes over. The enforcement of law goes through changes and the civillians are widely affected by this.
  • Buoyed by Aid

As the NYT puts the boost, "Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan, imposing strict enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing" (3). With such drastic changes in the country in such a small amount of time, many issues of violence appear in the damaged country of Afghanistan.
  • Drove the Taliban out of Afghan cities

The NYT explains due to an ultimatum refusal, "An air and ground campaign began that drove the Taliban out of the major Afghan cities by the end of the year" (3). Thanks to this movement, Afghanistan was able to start to recover from the damage caused by the Taliban.

The NYT states that, "In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the exhiled former king of Afghanistan, was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the leader of the country" (3). With a change of governemnt leader comes a change in the way the country is run. Government has large impact on the lives of civillians.
