Wins the title of Miss Universe, becoming the first Turkish woman to achieve this honor. She is dubbed "Keriman Halis Hanım Dünya Kraliçesi" (Lady Keriman Halis, World Queen).
Following the introduction of the Surname Law, she is bestowed with the surname "Ece" by the President of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Keriman Halis Ece passed away on 28 January 2012 in Istanbul at her daughter's home due to heart failure.
