Cordes graduated from Indiana University in 1972

beat out about 200 other applicants in 1976 to become the first female varsity coach at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, where she coached tennis.

In 1979 she was lured to Whittier College, where she was department chair of physical education and recreation.

Wrote “Outdoor Recreation: Enrichment for a Lifetime.” with Hilmi Ibrahim
First published in 1992, the book has been repeatedly reprinted and is used in about 80 schools. -
She received the lifetime achievement award from a presidential commission for her work as an author and educator.
