    William Washington Gordon II

    William or Willie was Juliette's father. He was a Yale graduate and was part of the Savannah Militia, and during the Civil War, he was a Confederate Captain. During the Spanish-American war he was a brigadier general. Before this war, William was elected into the Georgia House of Representatives. He did not go back into politics after the war, but he kept an interest in the Georgian Democratic politics for the rest of his life. He insread became a cotton factor and a commission merchant.

    Eleanor Kinzie Gordon

    Eleanor or Nellie was Juliette's mother an was born in Chicago. She had a firey personality and was just as humorous as Juliette. Nellie was a writer and during the Spanish -American war, she helped establish a hospital in Miami.

    Juliette's Birth
    On Oct. 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia, Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon was born. She was the second child of six to William Washington Gordon and Eleanor Kinzie Gordon. The Gordon family were early settlers of Savannah and the Kinzies had an important role in founding the city of Chicago, Illinois.

    Juliette attended boarding school at Virginia Female Institute in Staunton, Virginia, which is now Stuart Hall School. She later attended Mesdemoiselles Charbonniers, a French finishing school in New York City.

    On her parent's 29th wedding aniversity, Juliette married William Mackay Low, a wealthy Englishman. After the wedding, Juliette moved to England with her husband, but she did travel from England to America often. During the Spanish-American war Juliette came to America to help with her mother's hospital. By then her marriage was falling apart, and by her husband's death in 1905, they were in the midst of a divorce.

    First Girl Scout Meeting
    After the war, Juliette was searching for something to do with her life. In 1911 she met the founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in England, so she decided to start the Girl Guides of America. On March 12, 1912 she started her first troop of 18 girls in her backyard. They consisted of her niece " Daisy Doots" and some of her friends. Juliette changed the name to Girls Scouts the following year.

    Juliette's Death
    After 15 years of working with the Girl Scouts, Juliette died due to breast cancer. She is now burried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. She is burried in her uniform, and in her pocket is a note that reads, "You are not only the first Girl Scout, you are the best Girl Scout of all."

    *After her birth, Juliette's uncle called her a daisy which became her nickname that lasted her whole life.
    *Juliette was a very animated person all throughout her life. She was humorous, wrote peoms and plays that her brothers and sisters would act out, sketched, painted, and sculpted.

    *Juliette was fond of exotic birds, GA mockingbirds, and dogs.
    *She was a strong swimmer and was the captain of her swim team.
    *She conoed as an adult and was an avid tennis player.
    *She was well known for standing on her head, and she would do so every years on her, her nieces, and her nephew's birthdays to prove that she could. Once she even did it on the GS headquaters to show off a pair of shoes.

    *She lost most of her hearing in one ear due to a disease and all hearing in the other due to a grain of rice that got stuck in her ear on her wedding day.
    *Juliette welcomed all girls no matter what disease or disability they had because she was deaf, had back problems, and had cancer.
