    In the spring of 1964, the fist combat American troops landed in Vietnam. Vietnam is a country in Asia. The troops went there because the U.S. government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam.
  • The Birth of Joanne Rowling

    On July 31, 1965, the Rowling husband and wive became a family of three when Anne Rowling gave birth to a baby girl at Cottage Hospital in Yate. The proud parents named their daughter Joanne Rowling, with no middle name. Soon everyone starrted calling her Jo.
  • Dianne (Di)

    Jo's earliest memory was the day Dianne, or Di as everyone called her, was born. From children to adults, Di always read Jo's books and gave comments on what she liked and didn't like. Also, when Jo was in poverty, Di was always there to help her and didn't let her give up on her dreams.

    During Jo's time in her secondary school, Wyedean, she met Sean Harris. He was the first of her friends to learn to drive and that meant freedom for Jo. Some of Jo's happiest teenage memories were zooming off into the darkness in Sean's car.

    On August 27, 1987, America first met The Simpsons. It was a filler before a break in the Tracy Ulman Show. After about sixty of these, The Simpsons had its chance as a sitcom. The first "regular" Simpson episode was a Christmas episode that was aired on FOX on January 21, 1989.
  • A Mother's Death

    Before Christmas of 1990, Jo went to vist her parents in Tutshill. On Christmas Eve, she said good-bye to her parentes and went home to Manchester. Early in the morning of December 30, Jo's phone rang. When she heard her fathers voice, she knew someting bad had happened. Her mother, Anne Rowling, had died. Anne Rowling had MS which is multiple sclerosis, a incurabl disease in the nervous system.
  • Arantes

    In 1992, Jo married Jorge Arantes, who she had met in a bar called the Meia Cave. On July 27, 1993, Jo gave birth to her baby girl called Jessica. Then on November 1993, the relationship reached a breaking point and Jo and Jessica fled Portugal and went to Edinburgh, where her sister, Di (her nickname of Dianne), was living at during the time.
  • Poverty

    After running away from Arantes, Jo stopped in Edinburgh, Scotland and fell into a poverty trap. Even in the hard times, she continued to write the Harry Potter series. She went to school, took care of her daughter, and continued to write.
  • Teaching

    In January 1995, Jo applied for a program in modern languages at Moray House, run by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Jo was one of one hundred twenty candidates for the 30 available spots in the program. Jo told interviewers that she was so thrilled to be accepted into the program.
  • Harry Potter's Start

    In the late 1995, the first book of Harry Potter's adventures in Hogwarts was finished. She typed the whole manuscript (all ninety thousand words) on a second hand manual typewriter. Because she could not afford to make copies at the time, she typed another complete manuscript.

    Our CIA calls actions like this a "blowback", meaning they are counter-attacking for our own interference in other nation's business. An opinion from our government is that 9/11 was a political act because they hit the Twin Towers (a symbol of our financial strength), the Pentagon (symbol of our military power), and the White House (a symbol of our government). 9/11 happened because we told people how to live, and they pushed back.

    Now, J.K. Rowling is living in Killiechassie, Scotland with her three kids and her husband. She has finished the Harry Potter series and is working on a new book. She is so famous now that she cannot go to any place that she would go to to write a book without getting "attacked" by fans.
