    -medium bomber was selected as the delivery vehicle it could fly off a carrier with a useful bomb load and enough fuel to hit Japan and continue to China.
    -each plane had a five-man crew, attacked the Tokyo area, looking to disable Japans army.
    -none of the planes reached the Chinese airfields
    -eliminate the risk of any more such raids by the early destruction of America's aircraft carriers, a decision that led them to disaster at Midway

    - fought in the waters southwest of the Solomon Islands and eastward from New Guinea
    -was the first of the Pacific War's six fights between opposing aircraft carrier forces
    -U.S kept Japanese away from Australia and their supplies
    -In the fighting, they lost a light carrier, a destroyer and some smaller ships. Shokaku received serious bomb damage and air group was badly depleted. those two carriers were eliminated from the upcoming Midway operation

    -Saipan had been occupied by the Japanese since World War I and had been colonized in the 1920s and 1930s. At the time of the American invasion, there were about 30,000 civilians on the island, together with about 26,000 army troops of the Japanese 43rd Division and 6,000 naval personnel.
