  • Doolittle Raid

    Doolittle Raid
    Air attack was launched on Japan by The aircraft carrier, Hornet. It was lead by Colonel James H. Doolittle.The B-25B “Mitchell” medium bomber was chosen. A volunteer group was made. The plan was so secret that not even the commander of the ship the planes would be placed on, did not know until the day of. The 16 hornet planes had a crew of 5 each and bombed around the Tokyo area. The damage was modest however it was retaliation and the Japanese were embarrassed.
  • Coral Sea

    Coral Sea
    Fought in the Southwest waters of Solomon Islands.
    First check on a great offensive.
    Resulted from an attack of Japanese trying to capture Port Moresby.
    Japanese couldn’t take Moresby, if captured it would make Japanese more powerful.
    From May 7th to May 8th.

    Before the battle of Midway, the Japanese were superior but after they were equal.
    Japans Admiral planned to get back at Americans for Doolittle Raid and Coral sea.
    He planned to take away all defenses by sinking aircraft carrier and place a Japanese air base there.
    Americans caught wind of the attack and were ready.
    Only one carrier was lost.

    First Major offensive by allies against Japan
    Guadacanal was very improtant to the Japanese because it was close to Australia. For this reason, allies had to take it from them.
    American troops then pushed to get Mt. Austen
    The fire was heavy but they succeeded.
    They took back the island and left he Japanese without having a stronghold near australia.

    The previous battle had left the Japanese only holding the Philippines.
    The Americans wanted to cut the Japanese homeland from the Japanese forces.
