    Pearl Harbor Survivor The Japanese launched their first attack on the United States, beginning World War 2. The day began like any other day: I ate breakfast, brushed my teeth, and headed down to the mess hall for kitchen duty. Suddenly, our squadron leader ran in barking orders. Hawaii was under attack by the Japanese. I dashed only to see out cook lying dead on the ground.

    Businesses/banks siezed Directly following Pearl Harbor, the Treasury Department took control of all Japanese banks and businesses.
    This morning as I was on my way to my flower shop, I opened the newspaper to see horrifying images of Pearl Harbor. Later that same day, my shop was shut down by the governement. I don't understand; I did not cause or support the attack, yet my livelihood was being torn apart. I too am an American.

    Today is my 5th birthday. I ran downstairs in the morning to see what my mother had cooked for breakfast and was greeted by haphazardly packed suitcases. My parents rushed me out and we were taken by some Army men to this place. It's scary here, I don't know what's going on or why I had to leave my home.

    The first large group of Japanese were sent from Los Angeles to Manzanar, a temporary detention center.
    It is my first day of work in the military. I'm stationed at Manzanar as a guard. Tons of Japs just arrived; they look sneaky. I can't wait to give them what they deserve for killing my brother at Pearl Harbor.

    The Western Defense Commander announced the evacuation of 120,000 Japanese from their homes.
    The stats came in today: we're up to 120,000 now. So many people, I can't quite explain this feeling of guilt. But, I must support my Commander in Chief and above all, the security of my nation.

    Henry Stimson formed a volunteer all-Japanese combat team to serve in the European front. They became the most decorated regiment with the most casualties.
    I heard about what that Stimson fellow said, and I want in. I will fight for my country despite where my grandparents came from. I'll show everyone that I love this nation.

    Hirabayashi was convicted of breaking the government instituted curfew on all Japanese-Americans. Yasui saw this as unconstitutional and therefore purposefully broke the curfew to go to court.
    I heard about the ruling on Hirabayashi and I am angered beyond belief. Such an act is unconstitutional and I will do everything in my power to fight it. Today I will break curfew.

    The Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in order to fight Nazi forces stationed in France. It was the beginning of an Allied victory.
    I held my rifle tight as I jumped from the B boat. The water was red and there was death surrounding me, but I feel numb and focused.

    The WRA announced the timeline for closing the camps: they would be closed before 1945 and the WRA program would be liquidated by 1946.
    Finally! I've been locked up in this camp for 3 years and it is time for me to go home. This racist madness and horrible war must end, it has brought my wife, children, and I nothing but hardship.

    The Japanese have surrendered! Finally this war can end and my son can come home. I've missed him so. The Yamagachis should be coming home soon too, I'm so gald I've kept their house clean and ready for them. They're such kind people.

    The process of closing all camps occured through October 15 to December 15.
    After 4 long years, I've made it back to my home. Everything has been looted and broken, I am disgusted with the disloyalty of my neighbors. However, I am free from oppression now.
