    Period of Isolation

    Japan during the early 17th century all the way till the 19th century had selectively traded with only China and Dutch merchants that came from India. They had constantly refused the offers and request of many western countries who all wanted access to their ports
  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    The United States of America had indirectly forced Japan to allow them to use their ports for trading due to the porgress in industralisation that America had at that time.
  • Trading with other Western Countries

    During 1860, Japan very much like China begin to open treaty ports and grant many western countries permission to use their ports.
  • Tokugawa shogun stepped down

    The majority of the Japanese being unhappy that the shogun had given in to the foreign countries demands.
  • Period: to

    Meiji era

    After the shogun had stepped down, Mutsuhito took control of the government for 45 years, and named it the Meiji era. During this time Japan experience the age of both modernisation and industrialisation and its economoy became as modern as any in the world.
  • First Japanese railroad line

    The Japanese built their first railroad line, connecting 2 of their cities: Tokyo and Yokohama.
  • Rapid increase in Coal Production

    During 1913, Japan was in the process of modernizing and industralising their country, The Coal production grew from half a million tons in 1875 to more than 21 million tons in 1913.
  • Developed Railroad Line

    By 1914, Japan had developed its railroad line system and had over 7000 miles of railroad.

    Japan continues to develop in its technological areas and has become one of the most modernised and industrialised places in the world.
