On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese flew over the naval base of Pearl Harbor. They intended to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and hence protect Japan's advance into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, where it sought access to natural resources such as oil and rubber. This event caused the US to join WW2 on the side of the Allies and this eventually caused the Axis Powers to lose the war.
