  • Event 1

    The arrival of Matthew Perry in Japan. He brought a letter from President Fillmore from the U.S. asking if the shogunate would allow free trade.
  • Event 2

    The Treaty of Kanagawa. A treaty which allowed Japan to open two ports that were open for the United States. This allowed more opportunities of trade.
  • Event 3

    The Tokugawa shogun stepped down, putting an end to military dictatorship. Mutsuhito, Japan's emperor, then took control of this empire.

    Event 4

    The Japanese sent diplomats all over Europe to learn how to modernize their country. They observed the German army and the British army. They also improved on their economy so that it was like all over the world. They also strengthened their education as well as their transportation and technology. Overall, Japan became very competitive to the West.

    Event 6

    After agreeing that the Chinese and Japanese troops would not march in Korea in 1885, the Japanese were furious that China broke the agreement. The Japanese sent troops to fight Chinese in Korea and engaged in war. This war lasted only for a couple of months.

    Event 7

    Russia and Japan went to war to gain ownership of Manchuria. The Japenese drove the Russians out of Korea, and captured the Russian fleet. In 1905, they began peace negotiations.
  • Event 8

    The Treaty of Portsmouth. This treaty forced Russia out of Korea, as well as giving Japan the captured territories.
