    Jane's Parents Die of Typhus
    In the span of a few months, both of her parents (who were missionaries) die of typhus. She is then adopted by her uncle and aunt. This sets the stage for her terrible childhood.

    After being harrassed by John for years and neglected by Mrs. Reed, Jane finally tells Mrs. Reed how she feels, and how much she despises her. She then leaves for Lowood to begin a new chapter of her life.

    After six years of being a student at Lowood, Jane becomes a teacher there for another two years.

Jane doesn't realize that this will begin a series of events leading to the biggest change of her life.

    Jane Saves Rochester From a Fire
    During the night, Jane realized that Rochester's bed was on fire. She managed to put it out with the water containers by his bed. The odd and mysterious Grace Poole is supected as having something to do with it. No one really knows what Grace does, but she is still there and never gets fired.
  • Mr. Mason Comes to Thornfield and is Injured in the Night

    Mr. Mason comes to see Rochester, but during the night, as he is sleeping, he is heard screaming in his room for help. When Jane comes in, he is bleeding and saying, "she bit me." Grace Poole is seen in a room within that room, and from the room is coming dog-like snarls. This adds even more mystery to Grace Poole.
  • Jane Leaves Thornfield to Visit Mrs. Reed

    Jane goes to visit Mrs. Reed, who isn't in good health, due in part to her son, John Reed, who has been acting like an idiot, wasting all her money that she gives him whenever he asks for it. This all led to his death, which many think was a suicide. Jane has a few talks with Mrs. Reed shortly before she dies, and stays several more weeks.

    After an elongated stay with her aunt and cousins, she finally returns to Thornfield.
  • Jane Has a Troubling Night

    Jane Has a Troubling Night
    Nights before the planned wedding, Jane has some bad dreams, possibly premonitions of the marriage. As well, when she wakes up in the middle of the night, she sees a horrible figure in her room, which rips her wedding veil. However, when she tells Rochester of all these things, he suspiciously ignores her and changes the subject.

  • The Marriage is Opposed at the Last Minute

    The Marriage is Opposed at the Last Minute
    As they are about to be married in the church, Mr. Mason and another man oppose the marriage, saying Rochester is already married, and to Bertha, Mr. Mason's sister. Rochester tries to justify this by showing them to Bertha, a madwoman that he has kept locked up in a room for years. Nevertheless, the marriage is called off.
  • Jane Flees Thornfield

    Jane knows that she can't stay at Thornfield because Rochester is already married. She flees in the night without saying goodbye to anyone.
  • Jane is Taken in by St. John Rivers

    Jane is Taken in by St. John Rivers
    After spending all of her money to go as far away as possible, she has no food and no money. She begs for something to eat, but no one will give her anything. She finally comes across the house of St. John Rivers and his sisters, who let her in, give her food and shelter, and help her recover.
  • Jane recieves an Inheritance from a Relative

    St. John tells Jane that a Jane Eyre has a relative which has died, and therefore has an inheritance of 20,000 pounds awaiting her. This leads St. John to reveal to her that he and his sisters are Jane's cousins. In this, Jane decides to divide the fortune between all of them, 5,000 pounds each.
  • St. John Proposes to Jane

    St. John Proposes to Jane
    St. John proposes to Jane, but she declines, because he only wants a helper when he is in India. She knows that he will not really love her. Soon after this, she decides to leave and return back to Thornfield to look for Rochester.
  • Jane Returns to Thornfield

    However, she hears of a fire that burned down Thornfield. The fire was started by Bertha, who then went to the roof and jumped to her death. Rochester, in trying to save people, loses one of his hands and the sight in both of his eyes.
  • Jane finds Rochester at the Manor-House of Ferndean

    She reveals herself to Rochester, who is shocked to meet her again.
  • Jane and Rochester get Married

    Jane and Rochester finally get married, with no objections this time, and nothing to stop them.
