    This timeline presents a breif timeline of Jane Austen's life from her first home in Steventon to her final days in Whinchester.
  • Boarding School

    Boarding School
    In the Spring of Jane's 8th year, she and her sister, Cassandra, were sent off to boarding school to recieve a proper education. Jane attended Mrs. Crawley's school in Oxford, and would have come across many of same poor treatments that seemed to haunt girls schools during this time. Jane does not recall her school days in any other her letters, but does describe headmistresses and boarding schools for girls in Emma and Sense and Senseability.
  • Pride and Prejudice Draft

    Pride and Prejudice Draft
    After completing boarding school, Jane began writing what would later become her most prized novel, Pride and Prejudice. The first draft was completed sometime in 1799, but would not be published until 1813.
  • Engagement---Sike!

    Jane recieves her only marriage proposal from Harris Bigg-Wither. Despite his poor looks, he is an Oxford educated man and heir to a large family estate. Jane accepts his proposal only to denounce it the next day, claiming it was a mistake.
  • Move to Bath

    At 26, Jane's father moves the family to Bath. Mr. and Mrs. Austen were excited about the location of Bath in relation to Wales and Devon. It also situated the family to close proximity of Mrs. Austen's wealthy brother. Jane was not thrilled about the move and leaving her familiar country life behind for the city.
  • Final days and Death

    Final days and Death
    In April, Jane agreed to be taken to Winchester to be under the care of the surgeons there. Despite Jane insisting that she was getting betrer, it is seen in letters that Cassandra disagreed. Juy 18th was a sunny day, and at about 5:30 in the afternoon Jane descended into her final chapter. She is burried in Whinchester Cathedral, and her grave is visited by thousands of fans each year.
