    Dad's arrival to the South from the North
    During North Korea's retreat, my dad came to South Korea from North Korea. It was during the retreat that my dad and his seven other siblings even got the chance to move across the border. As written in the story, my dad was very proud that he could lead all his siblings to South Korea since it was rare for so many people to survive while crossing the border.

    President Park Jung-Hee's Saemaul Movement
    President Park Jung-Hee, father of the current president in Korea, led the Saemaul Movement in South Korea. The movement started as the Korean government providing 335 bags of cement to each administrative distinct and allowing each distinct to freely use the cement. This movement was not only a rural village development project but also a as first step to modernization for the whole nation. Saemaul Movement is commonly known as the first step of Korea in developing into a wealthy nation.

    Soviet War in Afghanistan
    As a part of the Cold War that began in 1949, Soviet war in Afghanistan is among the most famous ones. It was a war between the Soviet Union and the Islamist Mujahideen Resistance. The Islamist Mujahideen Resistance was backed up by not only the CIA of the US with Operation Clones but also Saudi Arabia, other Muslim nations, and Pakistan. Since the Korean War is also a part of the Cold War and my dad was involved in the Korean War, my dad often told me about this war in Afghanistan.

    Gwangju Massacre
    Led by the Chosun University students, thousands of students and protestors gathered to protest the state of martial law that was enforced since coup de tat, which had brought down dictator Park Chung-hee and put General Chun Doo-hwan in presidential place. At least 165 people were reported to be killed by soldiers. As a middle schooler at the time and living close to Gwangju, I was not only scared but also shocked that my older siblings were getting involved in the protest.

    Jackie Chan - "Seven Lucky Stars"
    My favorite actor was Jackie Chan. The movie that I go to watch in the story is Jackie Chan's newly released "Seven Lucky Stars". It involved powerful actions and fantastic comic storyline. When the movie released, all of my friends and I were competiting about who would get to watch it first. The movie, as always Jackie Chan's movie is, was wonderful and thrilling.

    1988 Seoul Olympics
    From September 17 to October 2, Seoul was overwhelmed with a world wide event. It was the first time for Korea to host an Olympic game and Seoul was filled with celebrations. I came to Seoul with my parents to feel the festive mood and was amazed at the great number of Westerners that have come to Seoul to watch the Olympics. Not only was the game interesting because Korea ranked 4th overall, but also the atmosphere in Seoul was filled with sense of unification and cheers.

    Tiananmen Square Protests
    Pro-democracy protestors of China gathered around Tiananmen Square and demanded for a political reformation. However, many were killed due to the indiscriminate attack by the People's Liberation Army. Tiananmen Square protest was around the similar time period that democracy actually started to see light in Korea after the period of dictatorship although Korea was declared as a democractic nation.

    Debut of Seo Taiji and Boys
    Seo Taiji and Boys were the one of the most popular first generation boy idol group. They are famous for their songs "I know", "You in Illusion", "Rock'n Roll Dance", and "Now". They did both rock music and raps. It was known that 80% of the Korean population were Seo Taiji and Boys' fans. I was also a fan of Seo Taiji and Boys at the time and bought all of their albums. Visiting their concert was one of the most fun event in my life.
