McCandless arrives at Lake Mead ready to start his journey into the wild. He is eager to prove himself.

McCandless decides to abandon his car. He packs everything in a backpack and starts to hitchhike.

Throughout July and August, McCandless hitchhikes to Lake Tahoe and the Cascade Mountains. He meets Jan Burres and Bob while he is hitchhiking. McCandless learns that not all people are evil and corrupt like his parents.

McCandless canoes the Colorado River and sends a postcard to Wayne Westerburg. He learns that people can be nice, but he still wishes to pursue individuality among the wilderness.

Chris' parents hire a private investigator to find out where he is just to find that he donated close to 25,000 dollars to charity.

He almost drowns in a storm while in his canoe. He learns that nature is more dangerous then he once perceived from when he first started the adventure through in the wilderness.

McCandless was caught by immigration when he tried to get back into the United States from Mexico. He learns that not everyone is going to be nice and allow him to get away with things without consequences.

He travels to the Pacific Coast after being caught by immigration.

McCandless meets a couple at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He lost 25 pounds.

McCandless sends a postcard to Jan to let her know where he is. He learns that he can depend on people besides himself.

He meets Franz and learns that some people can be willing to be his mentor in something he actually wants to pursue.

McCandless is driven by Franz.

Chris McCandless started his journey to Alaska in April. He learns and gains confidence in order to even start his journey.

McCandless pitches a tent.

He hunts and kills a moose. He feels guilty. He learns that he couldn't have saved the meat and the moose was essentially killed in vain.

Chris McCandless writes in his Journal, "Day 100!" At this point, he learned that he could survive without the help of others in the Alaskan wilderness.

In Chris' journal entry, he puts something about "beautiful blueberries". At this point, it is believed that he is poisoned.

McCandless dies from poisoning and starvation.
