11th Birthday
Ha celebrates her 11th birthday, but with less than normal because of the poor economy. -
Stories
Ha's mother reveals how her and her husband came to Saigon to get away from Communism, but her father & brother were permanently stuck living in the north when her sister in law was waiting to deliver a child just as the north & south closed their doors. -
Departure
Ha, Mother, and their family leave Saigon on a navy ship once it's heard that the Communist armies of the north are making their way down south. -
First landing
Ha, her mother, and the rest of the family land on Guam, where they live and eat inside a huge tent, as to the other arrivals temporarily. -
School registration
Once in Alabama, ha goes to register for school with her sponsor. -
Neighbors
Ha's mother decides they need to meet the neighbors, and they do so with slammed doors & screams directed at them, with the exception of Miss Washington who lives to the left of them. -
Wartime in Saigon
During a lesson on Saigon in school, Ha feels like sometimes she'd prefer "wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama." -
Pink Boy
Ha avoids a fight with Pink Boy's cousin very smoothly, but is almost punched out by Pink Boy himself, until she moves to the left and Pink Boy slams to the pavement in pain. -
Tet-1976
Ha once again celebrates Tet with her family with this year being the Year of the Dragon. She wishes for her family to be happy and for her to learn to fly-kick, in a year that brings uncertainty without Mother being able to visit the I Ching Teller of Fate.
