    Colonial America: Teacher Training
No special training; not a prestigeous occupation; viewed teaching as a temporary; job often connected with a church and had duties there as well.
Compared to todays step towards becoming an educator to then, it is a huge difference and not only that, they connected school and church toegther. We don't see every school like that today.

    1) White indentured servants brought passage to America agreeing to work as teachers to pay the debt.
    2) Apprenticeships - studied under a school master for ten years to become a schoolmaster.
I would see how being a student teacher can help you become a teacher, but I'm curious if someone knew more than the basics in teaching?

Where did the youngest children start? first grade or in a class when everyone was combined? Maybe this is where educators began to realize for every age, there are needs and this is how they could focus on the certain age groups.
  • Wisconson; Margarethe Mayer Schurz
