    The Germans sank a british ocean liner, the Lusitania, which had american citizens on it. More than 120 U.S. citizens were drowned when the ship sank. There was also information that Germany was planning to have Mexico attack the U.S.

    The treaty was signed in the French Palace of Versailles, hence the name. In the treaty, Germany was forced to pay huge amounts of money to to war victims. Germany was also forced to take full responsibility for the war.

    Hitler was very good at winning supporters. He was a brilliant speaker and used Germans’ anger over WWI to rally them together. He promised to make Germany better and become the “master race”.

    WWII begins- Poland was quickly overrun by German forces. The Germans used a battle tactic called a blitzkrieg, which is German for “lightning war”. Poland had natural defences that slowed Germans down, but they still conquered Poland.

    The U.S. banned selling oil to Japan in hopes to slow japanese war machine development. Japan held peace conferences with the U.S. but secretly plotted war. The raid on Pearl Harbor lasted about two hours with large amounts of damage.

    President Truman had to make a difficult decision whether or not to use the atomic bomb on Japan. Many believed it would bring the war to a quick end and save many lives. However, many others thought the bomb should only be used as a last resort.

    Mao had a book that had all of his writings in it. If anyone did not have possession of this book, they would be punished. Having Mao’s book was a sign of loyalty to the Communist leader.

    North Korea wanted to unite with South Korea under a communist government. U.S. did not want communism to spread, so they asked the U.N. to intervene. North Korea almost conquered the South within a few months.
