The treaty was signed in the French Palace of Versailles, hence the name. In the treaty, Germany was forced to pay huge amounts of money to to war victims. Germany was also forced to take full responsibility for the war. -

Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany
Hitler was very good at winning supporters. He was a brilliant speaker and used Germans’ anger over WWI to rally them together. He promised to make Germany better and become the “master race”. -
Germany attacks Poland – WWII begins
WWII begins- Poland was quickly overrun by German forces. The Germans used a battle tactic called a blitzkrieg, which is German for “lightning war”. Poland had natural defences that slowed Germans down, but they still conquered Poland. -
Japans attack on Pearl Harbor
The U.S. banned selling oil to Japan in hopes to slow japanese war machine development. Japan held peace conferences with the U.S. but secretly plotted war. The raid on Pearl Harbor lasted about two hours with large amounts of damage. -
U.S. declares war on Japan
U.S wanted to stay out of WWII. News of the attack on Pearl Harbor spread very quickly and U.S. joined the war. Germany and Italy then declared war on the U.S. -
D-Day
D-day was when Allied Forces invaded France. Troops landed on beaches of Normandy and had to face strong German defences. Eventually Allied forces captured the beaches and reconquered most of France. The Germans quickly surrendered France. -
