    Drop Hammer

Created by François Bourdon in 1841. The principle of the drop hammer is that the force of the steam, acting on the piston, lifts the hammer by the rod. As the steam escapes, the entire piston plus the hammer falls back and hits the workpiece with great force. The movement of a drop hammer, even of 100 tons, is very precise: an experienced blacksmith could close a bottle with a cork without breaking it, or break the shell of a nut leaving the fruit intact.
