President D. Roosevelt issues Executive Order 8802. When this occurred, it opened a national defense job, as well as, opening a variety of government jobs to all of the Americans. This was significant because the jobs were open to all races and nationalities.

Rosa Parks played a huge role in fighting for racial equality. She refused to give her spot up on the bus to a white man, in Alabama. Because of this, she became a figure and activist to end discrimination on race at this time.

President Eisenhower’s signs the Civil Rights Act of 1957. His introduced a bill under the civil rights. The rights granted African-Americans the right to vote.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential activists in this movement. He is remembering for giving his “I have a dream speech,” which was given in 1963. The Freedom Riders were formed by a group of civil rights activists. During Freedom Rides, African American and White people would refuse to sit in areas of buses to protest segregation. At this time, Whites would sit in the back and African Americans would sit in the front. Roy Wilkins took part early in the Civil Rights Movement. He fought for equality in rights for those who were African American. He contributed to the creation and historic civil rights March in Washington.
