Important Developments in Vietnam during the French Colonial Era from 1862-1945

  • Saigon Treaty of 1862

    This treaty stated that three southern provinces of Vietnam were to become part of the French Colony, later will be called Chochinchina. French use water management to create new agricultural land.

    Signed northern vietnam (Annam and Tonkin) over to the French Colony.

    Paul Doumer- Governor General

    He became the Governor General of French Indochina, and he immediately began implementing a more western style of government, leaving the Vietnamese bureaucracy powerless. Even all in government positions were filled by officials imported from France.
  • Ho Chi Minh goes to Paris

    Ho Chi Minh emerges in Paris at end of World War I and tries to petition President Woodrow Wilson for self-determination of Vietnam.
  • Ho Chi Minh Founds the ICP (Indochinese Communist Party)

    ICP was initially meant just for Vietnam and there was some discussion to expand the party to all of Indochina.
  • Bao Dai becomes French Puppet in Vietnam

  • Japan Invades French Indochina

    Japan was victorious during the 7 days of fighting, however they only gained occupation of Northern Vietnam.
  • Ho Chi Minh Starts the Viet Minh

    The Viet Minh was originally created to free Vietnam from the French but then later formed into a group that was opposed of Japan occupation as well and later South Vietnam because of their involvement with the US.
  • ICP organises a guerrilla force, Viet Minh, in response to invasion by Japan during World War II

    ICP stands for the Indochinese Communist Party
  • Ho Chi Minh announces Vietnam's independence

    Viet Minh also seizes power at this time.
